The compatibility gotcha with Clopay is drum diameter. Clopay has used 4-inch drums on lighter single-car doors and 5.25- to 6-inch drums on heavier double-wide doors with thicker cables. You cannot interchange these just because the shaft diameter matches. A 4-inch drum on a heavy 16-foot door will over-rotate, cause cable slack, and throw the door off balance within weeks.

Identifying the part before we arrive helps, though it’s not required. The drum is stamped with a part number on its face, usually visible if the door is fully closed. The cable diameter can be measured with a caliper at the bottom bracket: most Clopay residential doors use 1/8-inch 7×19 aircraft cable for single doors and 5/32-inch for doubles. If someone installed a generic 3/32-inch cable at some earlier date, that’s almost certainly why the door failed. Signs Your Clopay Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing

• The door hangs uneven or cocked in the opening. One cable has stretched or slipped on its drum, so one side is lifting while the other drags. The door is still on the track, but it’s fighting the hardware every cycle.
• You can see frayed strands at the bottom bracket or near the drum. Steel cable doesn’t snap all at once: it unwinds strand by strand. Visible fraying means replacement, not patching.
• A metallic scraping sound near the top corners during operation. The cable is jumping its groove on the drum, usually because the drum groove edges are worn flat or the cable has a kink that won’t seat.
• The cable has come off the drum entirely and is wrapped around the shaft. This is the failure most Ontario owners call us about after a cold snap. The drum’s set screws loosened over time, the drum slipped, and the cable lost tension and walked off the groove.
• Cracked or chipped drum edges near the set-screw holes. Clopay’s older die-cast drums can develop micro-cracks from repeated set-screw tightening. Once the flange cracks, the drum will split under torsion load.

We’re going to be direct here: a cable and drum replacement is not a safe DIY job. The torsion spring that sits on that same shaft is under hundreds of pounds of rotational force, and the cable is what holds the door against that load while it’s moving.
