Craftsman Torsion Spring Replacement: The Ontario Owner’s Guide

A Craftsman torsion spring replacement in Ontario typically runs $180-$340 installed, and we carry compatible torsion springs on our trucks for same-day replacement in most cases. The torsion spring is the coiled steel shaft mounted above your garage door opening; it stores the lifting force that makes a 150-pound door feel like it weighs about 10. When that spring snaps, you’ll usually hear it from anywhere in the house. It sounds like a firecracker going off in the garage.

We’re Servo Garage Doors Ontario, an independent garage door company, not a Craftsman dealer. That independence matters more than you’d think. We stock torsion springs in the wire gauges and inside diameters that match Craftsman doors, but we don’t have to mark anything up through a brand channel. We quote the range on the page, then we show you the broken spring before we touch it. More on that below.

Which Craftsman Models This Applies To

Craftsman garage doors are manufactured by several suppliers over the years, mostly through Clopay and Wayne Dalton production lines. That means the torsion spring on a 2018 Craftsman door from a builder supply yard won’t necessarily match the one on a 2009 model from Sears. The door label is the authority here. Look for a white or silver sticker on the left door jamb or on the inside of the bottom panel; it lists the model number, door weight, and sometimes the spring wire diameter.

In practice, we match springs by measurement, not model year. The three numbers that actually matter are wire diameter (typically 0.207 to 0.250 inch on residential Craftsman doors), inside diameter (usually 1.75 or 2 inches), and length (commonly 18 to 36 inches). This is also where OEM versus aftermarket gets settled. Craftsman doesn’t manufacture its own springs; they’re sourced from the same spring producers that supply Clopay and Wayne Dalton. A quality aftermarket spring with the same wire gauge, inside diameter, and length performs identically. We install both and stock what our techs would put on their own doors. The one compatibility gotcha worth knowing: some Craftsman doors use a torque-master style spring tube instead of a visible torsion spring. If your door has no spring visible above it, you have that system. It’s replaceable, but the conversion to a standard torsion setup is the fix we recommend, and it changes the parts picture. We’ll show you exactly what you have before we quote anything.

Signs Your Craftsman Torsion Spring Replacement Is Failing

Signs Your Craftsman Torsion Spring Replacement Is Failing

Most torsion springs don’t fail gradually in a way you can see from inside the house. But there are signals. Here’s what we find on service calls across Ontario:

  • A door that opens 6 inches, then stops. This almost always means the spring lost tension. The opener isn’t weak; it’s trying to lift the full weight of the door alone, which it was never designed to do. Running it in this state burns out opener gears fast.
  • A visible gap in the spring coils. A snapped torsion spring shows a clean break, typically near one end. You’ll see two separate coil sections with a gap between them. That’s the failure, not a symptom of one.
  • The door slams down when you release it manually. A healthy spring holds the door roughly in place at mid-height. If you pull the red release cord and the door drops hard, the spring isn’t carrying its share anymore.
  • Worn cables or a door that hangs crooked. When one spring breaks, the remaining spring pulls unevenly. The door lifts on one side, the cables loosen, and the bottom corners don’t land at the same time.
  • Rust along the coil edges. Inland Empire humidity isn’t the challenge here. It’s the temperature swings between Ontario’s hot afternoons and cool desert nights that cause micro-expansion and contraction. Rusted coil edges are where most springs eventually fail.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A Craftsman torsion spring replacement in Ontario falls in the $180-$340 range installed. The spread comes down to spring size and cycle rating. A standard 10,000-cycle spring on a single-car door lands at the lower end; a heavier 2-inch inside diameter spring rated for 25,000+ cycles on a double-wide door sits at the upper end. We stock both and quote by the spec, not by what the truck happens to have.

The price you get is the price you pay. Clause 1 of The Haven Standard is what we operate under: a flat, written price and written scope delivered before any work starts. No dispatch fee, no “we’ll see once we get in there.” The quote includes both springs (we replace them in pairs, because the second one is the same age and fatigured as the one that broke), labor, and a documented photo record of the failed spring and the finished install. Warranty on the work runs through our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If it’s not right, we make it right, and that’s in writing, not a handshake.

Service Ontario Installed Price
Torsion spring replacement (single door) $180-$250
Torsion spring replacement (double door) $230-$340
Torque-master to torsion spring conversion $280-$340
Spring + safety cable replacement $310-$590

Here’s the honest split. There are things you can safely check yourself: whether the spring has a visible gap, whether the door label is still legible, whether the cables are loose. Reading a label and looking at a spring won’t hurt you. But replacing a torsion spring is a different category. These springs are wound under 7 to 9 turns of stored tension. That’s enough force to break a wrist or worse if the winding bar slips. We don’t walk through DIY winding steps, because the risk isn’t worth the $60 you’d save on labor. This is one of the few garage door parts where we’ll say it plainly: call someone who does this daily.

Marcus Deller, our owner, has put in the better part of two decades on garage doors across the Inland Empire, and even he treats every spring wind with the same respect. Name the part, quote the range, then do the work. That’s how we run it. Call (951) 470-2012 and you’ll get a live person, not a recording.
