Craftsman Cable & Drum Replacement: The Ontario Owner’s Guide

Craftsman cable and drum replacement in Ontario typically runs $130-$250 installed, and we carry the parts on our trucks for same-day work in most cases. The cable is the braided steel line that lifts your door; the drum is the grooved spool at each end of the torsion tube that winds that cable as the door moves. You’ll usually find out one of them failed when the door hangs crooked, jerks on the way up, or one side of the cable is dangling loose and frayed.

Here’s the thing about Craftsman systems: the drum and cable on one side wear together, and we replace them as a pair. Installing a fresh cable onto a grooved-out drum just moves the failure down the road by a few months. When we quote this job in Ontario, both sides get inspected, and we tell you what we found with photos before any work starts. That’s Clause 4 of The Haven Standard, and it’s how Marcus Deller built this shop: photograph the failed part, then write the price.

Which Craftsman Models This Applies To

Craftsman garage door openers don’t drive the cables directly; the door’s torsion system does. That means this replacement applies to nearly every sectional Craftsman door setup in Ontario, regardless of whether the opener is a 1/2 HP chain drive from 2012 or a newer belt-drive unit. What matters is the door’s height, weight, and the drum profile on the torsion tube.

The compatibility detail that actually trips people up: Craftsman doors installed before roughly 2007 often used 4-inch drums with a flat cable groove pattern, while newer installs in Ontario tract homes tend to run 4-inch tapered drums or high-lift drums on taller setups. The wrong drum profile means the door doesn’t balance, and the opener burns out early trying to compensate. We measure the drum diameter and groove pattern on-site, and we verify the cable length against the door height: 7-foot doors take a different cable than 8-foot doors, and mixing them is a common DIY mistake.

On parts sourcing: we install OEM Craftsman cables and drums when the door is under an active warranty, and we offer quality aftermarket equivalents for everything else. The aftermarket cables we stock in Ontario use the same 7×19 aircraft-grade steel construction as OEM, and they cost less without trading away lifespan. We’ll tell you which option makes sense for your door and show you the part label before we install it.

Signs Your Craftsman Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing

Signs Your Craftsman Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing
  • The door hangs uneven or sags on one side. That’s usually a cable that’s begun to slip on the drum, or a drum that’s lost its groove and can’t hold tension. The door still moves, but it’s dragging, and the opener’s working harder than it should.
  • You can see frayed strands or a visible kink in the cable. Fraying means individual wires have snapped. A kink means the cable jumped the drum groove at some point. Both are one good cycle away from a full snap.
  • The door jerks or shudders partway up. When the cable binding releases suddenly on a worn drum, the door lurches. That motion stresses every hinge, roller, and the opener’s trolley carriage.
  • A grinding or scraping sound from the cable area during operation. Usually that’s the cable riding over a worn drum edge or rubbing against a bracket that’s shifted out of alignment.
  • The cable is loose or hanging off the drum entirely. This is the one we see most often in Ontario garages where doors get used several times a day. A fully unwound cable means the torsion system has lost its balance, and the door needs service before it drops.

If you’ve got a hanging or fully unwound cable, don’t try to run the door. The remaining cable is now carrying double the load, and it’s likely to snap on the next cycle.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Craftsman cable and drum replacement in Ontario runs $130-$250 installed, depending on whether we’re doing a cable pair only, a drum pair only, or both at once. A cable-only replacement on a standard 7-foot door sits at the lower end of that range. Adding drums moves it toward the top, especially if your Craftsman door uses tapered or high-lift drums. We’ll give you a flat, written price with the scope before any work starts, per Clause 1 of The Haven Standard. The price you’re quoted is the price you pay.

Every cable and drum replacement includes both sides inspected, the failed components photographed and shown to you, the replacement parts installed, tension rebalanced across the torsion system, and a test cycle count with the opener. We leave you with a documented photo record of the parts we pulled, the new parts installed, and the finished job. The work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it’s not right, we make it right.

DIY or Call Us?

DIY or Call Us?

Here’s the honest split. You can safely do a visual inspection: unplug the opener, close the door, and look at the cable and drum on each side. Fraying, kinking, a drum that’s worn smooth or grooved unevenly - those are things you can photograph and describe to us over the phone at (951) 470-2012.

What you should not do is attempt the replacement yourself. The cables on a Craftsman sectional door are under torsion spring tension, and when a cable is removed or slips off the drum, that stored spring energy has to go somewhere. Torsion springs in Ontario garages are wound to hold hundreds of pounds of force, and releasing that tension without the right winding bars and the right sequence is how people lose fingers or worse. This is a job for a trained technician. We carry the cables and drums on the truck, and a named technician shows up with a background check on file and the license number on the page.
